DogScooter is proud to sell the Chalo Sulky Uno, a one-person sulky custom made i
The Chalo Sulky Uno is a dorsal hitch sulky made in Seattle, Washington, USA. The Chalo Sulky Uno is built like a bicycle. Its frame is chromoly steel which is flexible and strong for its weight. It uses suspension forks used on mountain bikes. Its brakes are those standard on mountain bikes.
People look at it and think it is hard to pull. Like a bicycle, the sulky rolls very easily.
A dorsal hitch sulky has a single shaft that goes over the dog's back. Unlike a traditional sulky the dog is not confined between two shafts. Dogs find the single shaft easy to accept. Engineers note that one shaft weighs less than two.
The sulky's seat is behind the axles. When you sit on the seat, your weight lifts the shaft up. The shaft has upward lift on the harness. Think see-saw. Think lever and fulcrum. When the dog is pulling, your weight actually makes him lighter on his feet. Adjust the seat location relative to the axles/fulcrum with the handle of the seat slider. A light weight rider sits further aft than a heavy rider.
The harness is designed to protect the dog from the shaft tip. It is built with an aluminum plate, thick padding, and stiff webbing between shaft and back.
Daphne Lewis, DogScooter owner, and Chalo Colina, of Austin, Texas designed the first Chalo Sulky. David Wilson,
David Wilson Industries , a custom bike frame builder in Seattle, Washington, redesigned the original model. Present designer/builders are Ken Selvedge of KC Fabrications and Phil's Southside Bike Shop. Becky Loveless of
Alpine Outfitters designs and stitches our dorsal hitch harness, reins, and driving collar.
